As a mom of two young children, it’s safe to say that I don’t have the time (or childcare) to go to a physical gym. (If you do, I would love to know how you make it work because for me, it just doesn’t.) So I looked around for workout videos and stumbled upon the Blogilates POP Pilates videos. I initially tried a few cardio workouts, and when I was so sore I couldn’t move the next day, I was more than interested. I then found the Blogilates calendars, and I was hooked.
So, here are my eight reasons for loving the Blogilates POP Pilates videos.
- The videos are energetic and fun! Between the pop music (get it, POP Pilates!), the bright settings and Cassey’s upbeat personality, it makes workouts much, much easier.
- Pilates is a really great core workout. This is a major problem area for me. After two C-sections in less than two years, my core lacks muscle tone, and my skin is flabby. I bounced back pretty fast after my first child, but the second one has been very different. I’m sure many of you can relate. I love the way my core feels after a Pilates workout, and I can already see results.
- The videos are easily accessible and free! All of the POP Pilates videos I’m using are on YouTube under the Blogilates channel. They are just a click away. I can work out using my phone, tablet or TV, which is very appealing.
- The calendars are great! (and Free) Why re-invent the wheel if you don’t have to? I can have a certified instructor/trainer prepare my workouts for me without ever leaving my home. I started the Blogilates Beginner Calendar 2.0, which covers the first four weeks. From there, I will move to the monthly calendars. These are completely free as long as you subscribe to the newsletter, which is just an added bonus!
- Pilates is low impact. I’ve had a few injuries in my past that tend to flare with arthritis pain or just tend to be re-injured. Shoulder surgery, hip dislocations, Achilles tendinitis to name a few…That’s why having a workout plan that consists of mainly low impact exercise is really important to me. I love cardio and high impact exercises, but I pay for it if that’s all I do.
- Cassey, the creator of Blogilates, is normal. She wants you to be your best self, not Hollywood’s best self. She is strong and fit with an abundance of muscle tone, but I love that it’s subtle and feminine. She seems to enjoy life without always being at the gym. That’s something I strive for and hope to look like one day. You only live once so make it count! (and I’m not talking about how many days you went to the gym)
- No two videos are the same. Of course you have to repeat videos at times, but every new video seems to have a new take on an existing move. Variety in my workouts is key to me staying motivated. The last thing I need is another excuse.
- It’s about being positive. POP Pilates and the Blogilates mission is encouraging! It’s about supporting each other and becoming a better, stronger person through exercise. This is definitely the kind of support I need to keep moving toward my fitness goals. I am excited to be a POPster!
I’m sure I will come up with several more reasons along the way, but this will have to work for now. All I know is that I want to do the POP Pilates workouts, and for me, that is everything!!
Workout Tip: Make your workouts fun and enjoyable. I never follow through with something I’m dreading. So if you hate your workouts, change them!
My Fitness Past
Fitness has always been a big part of my life. I grew up in gymnastics and swimming. I was always fit, and I loved to work out! My dream was always to open a gym with my best friend, but as time went on, plans changed and life began to take over.
When the real world, meaning marriage and real job, started for me, I found it hard to balance the demands of daily life with my desire to work out. I got married and started my first real job within a few months of each other so it was highly overwhelming.
I tried to remain as active as possible without going to an actual gym, but I lacked the motivation to continue. Let’s face it, home workouts are not as easy as they seem so I never really got started.
We bought an elliptical, and it ended up sitting in a corner. I tried the occasional outdoor run, and that only lasted for a few days. Needless to say, I quit working out. Maybe some part of me liked having a break from fitness for the first time in my life. That’s not really what I wanted though. It just kind of happened.
A few years into marriage, I decided to show off and do a simple back handspring that didn’t turn out so well. Back handsprings used to be simple! I guess I had to learn how out of shape I was the hard way.
I suffered from painful back spasms any time I ran or jumped for the next three years, which felt very limiting and frustrating.
Once I finally took the time to let my back heal, I began exercising again only to find out that my shoulder had a problem. Bone spur, bursitis and a severely loose joint equaled surgery, four months of physical therapy and a year before it felt half way normal.
Then came my two children currently aged two and seven months (both via C-section), and I officially have not worked out more than once a month in about four years. There is more to my story, but that will come in time.
My Fitness Present
So today, I made a decision while looking at a version of myself in the mirror that I do not recognize. For my health, for my children, and for the fun of it, I am taking back my love of exercise. I am determined to improve the way I look and feel so that I can become a better version of my current self.
I love working out! There is nothing in the world that makes me feel as accomplished and happy. I love to work out hard and feel like I may not be able to keep going.
I like to sweat! That’s probably weird since I spent my childhood trying to hide my sweat from all the boys, who made fun of girls who actually worked hard, but sweating makes me feel like I’m doing something good!
Time has always been the problem, but I realize now that if I want to work out, I have to make time for it. It has to be a priority, and so it will be starting now!
For completeness sake, I should tell you a little more about my current body shape and overall goals.
I am 5’7. I weigh around 160 pounds, and I have an athletic (stockier) build. I am not obese, but I definitely feel and look out of shape. I have never been a twig, though I’ve wanted to be.
I am currently within about five pounds of my pre-pregnancy weight, but I look and feel completely different. My body fat percentage is significantly higher, and I feel more sluggish. I have much more loose skin. Can you say muffin top?
My weight loss has essentially plateaued, and nothing is working. Ideally, I would like to drop about fifteen pounds and get back to the weight I was in high school, but right now, I want to focus on my fitness level and body shape. I don’t want to lose weight and still be out of shape. That would be counter-productive.
I have always struggled with confidence in my body image. It has only gotten worse in the past few years so I’m really looking to improve the way I view myself.
For me, a big part of my body image is working toward a goal. If I’m working on my fitness goals, then I know that I’m doing something to better myself. That makes me feel more confident. That’s what I need right now.
